LED bulbs are used everywhere and are fast becoming accepted as the most energy efficient lighting available.  Any application that requires a light being switched on for a long period of time is ideally suited to LED bulbs as this is when you see the most energy savings.  An unlikely new area that is welcoming LEDs is lighting for fish tanks. LED’s have a number of advantages over standard incandescent lighting. One of these advantages is their versatility.  LED’s can come in an array of different colours, which can make them useful for a number of different domestic applications. Continue reading »

Following on from the success of our NxtGen Survey back in February we thought it would be a great idea to survey our lovely customers again. Continue reading »

Insulating your loft space will mean that less energy is needed to heat your house.  This in turn will mean paying less on your heating bills.  Not only will you be saving money on your fuel bills but you will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions (CO2): one of the biggest causes of climate change. Continue reading »

Climate change has been occurring ever since the birth of our planet 4.6 billion years ago.  The average temperature of the planet has historically varied greatly and the Earth has seen ice ages and warmer periods.  According to some experts the earth is warming at an unprecedented rate.  Green house gasses and in particular carbon dioxide contribute to the increasing climate change.  Man made carbon dioxide is at an all time high and a large amount of this comes from the energy we use daily. Since first appearing at the Paris Motor Show in 1910, neon signs have added vibrancy and colour to the streets of towns and cities. Places such as Times Square, New York have become famous for their neon lighting. But LEDs are now beginning to replace the neon signs of old. Continue reading »

LEDs and their components have featured in the annual EDN Hot 100 for several years. Their presence in this prestigious list confirms the value of LED technology to electronics and business.

What is EDN.com?

EDN.com is an online magazine for the EOEM (Electronics Original Equipment Manufacturer) industry. It provides news and technical information for company executives and electronics engineers.

At the end of each year, EDN compiles a list of products the editors and readers believe are the best of the past 12 months. LEDs, and the electronic parts required for LED lighting systems, make regular appearances in these Hot 100 lists.

Philips Lumileds’ LUXEON Rebel LEDs were in EDN’s 2009 Hot 100.

The performance specs of the LUXEON LEDs impressed EDN. These enable the light output and reliability of the bulbs to be consistent even at extreme temperatures.

Top LEDs of 2010

A year later, EDN placed Cree’s XLamp MPL EasyWhite LEDs in the Hot 100.

The LEDs in the XLamp deliver enough light output to match a 75-watt halogen bulb. The power the XLamp consumes however, is 78% less than its halogen equivalent.

The other benefit of the XLamp is the uniform colour of its LEDs. Light manufacturers have struggled in the past to match the colour outputs of individual LED bulbs. XLamp technology eliminates the need for this matching process.

LEDs in the 2011 Hot 100

The 2011 EDN Hot 100 featured five LED components: two drivers, a lighting controller, an LED array and an open shunt protector. Each of these reflects the innovative work confirming LEDs as the best lighting option for home and commercial use.

The LED industry may well have its share of mad scientists. But most people working on solid-state lighting solutions have a simple aim: to produce better LEDs. And the last few years have seen LED scientists make one breakthrough after another.  Continue reading »

Here’s a prediction: by the end of the decade, most new cars will use LEDs. Halogen and xenon bulbs will be a thing of the past. This change will occur because LEDs reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Continue reading »
