How LED lighting differs from other lighting

Technically, LEDs are very different from incandescent and compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. LEDs are solid-state lighting (SSL) and built in a very different way.

LEDs also have other qualities setting them apart from traditional lighting. They:

  • Cut back on energy use
  • Are good for the environment
  • Have a long lifespan
  • Are versatile at home or work

You can reduce your use of electricity by up to 90% if you replace traditional bulbs with LEDs. LED lighting is energy efficient and saves money.

LEDs and the environment

The production of electricity creates harmful carbon dioxide (CO2). But because LEDs use less energy than other forms of lighting, they are eco-friendly. If you replace your halogen downlighters, for example, with the equivalent LED bulbs, you reduce your annual CO2 emissions by 94%.

LEDs are also better for the environment than CFL lighting. CFLs contain mercury vapour. LEDs do not use mercury, and produce less toxic waste.

LEDs and heat

Put your hand near an incandescent bulb and you can feel the heat it gives off. LEDs remain cool. They convert energy into light far more effectively than incandescents.

Lifespan of an LED bulb

LEDs can last 50,000 hours. Compare this to the 1,000 hours you can expect from a halogen bulb, and the 10,000-hour lifespan of CFLs.

If you want to see how versatile LEDs are, check the way architects use them on the outside of buildings. It may be impractical to reproduce such effects at home, but you can still use LED bulbs to create imaginative lighting systems.

LEDs aren’t just different from other lighting; they are the future of lighting systems. By switching to LED bulbs, you cut back on energy use with a long-life, versatile product.
