A grid lighting system is one where by you control multiple ‘zones’ of lighting from one lighting system/ unit.

Each lighting switch will control one section of lighting on either a dimmer or rocker (on/off) switch. Grid dimmer switches are largely used for commercial use, a common example being in offices.

Why use a specific dimmer?

If using a grid system you will need a compatible grid dimmer switch, it will come as an individual module, which fixes into the grid switch. Once connected, the dimmer will control the lighting level of any particular section related to anyone switch. When using dimmable LED light bulbs you will require trailing edge style dimmer switch. Even on a grid system you will need an LED compatible dimmer switch. Using an LED compatible dimmer will ensure you do not experience any buzzing or flickering from the bulbs which can occur when using a traditional leading edge dimmer.

Where would I use one?

Grid systems are used mainly in commercial settings where you need versatile and flexible control over the lighting levels. Take for example a restaurant. Typically these will have lots of different areas of light and often they will need different levels of lights depending on how those areas are used. The bar and entrance may use simple on off switches as the lighting here will always stay at the same brightness, but other areas such as the dining tables may need to have adjustable lights to suit a particular mood or time of day. By utilizing a grid system with a mixture of dimmers and rockers, this could all be easily achieved and controlled from one spot and this makes grid systems a popular choice!

Grid systems are incredibly useful thanks to the versatility and control possibilities offered. Using a grid system, you can create separate sections within one room, all of which can be easily controlled from one place. By using LED light bulbs in conjunction with a compatible grid dimmer, you can also reduce your energy costs as LED light bulbs consume far less low power. This will dramatically reduce your energy bills. LED light bulbs also offer you a range of colours, beam angles and dimming capabilities, allowing you to be more creative and inventive with your lighting design.
