If you’re in business, you need to cut your overheads to a minimum. When economic times are hard, this principle assumes an even greater priority.

This explains why companies are reviewing their energy costs and turning to LED light bulbs. Philips Lighting is one of the leaders in this booming industry, and has recently saved the consulting firm, Ernst & Young, $1 million a year.

When you install an LED system from Philips Lighting, or a similar lighting company, you gain several money-saving advantages.

  • LED light bulbs use a fraction of the energy of traditional lighting.
  • The bulbs last for an average of 50,000 hours. If you run LED light bulbs for 12 hours each day, you shouldn’t need to replace them more than once every 12 or so years. This reduces maintenance costs.

The environmental credentials of LED light bulbs are also worth considering. Cutting your use of energy means you reduce your company’s carbon emissions.

Ernst & Young opts for Philips LED Lighting

These advantages were in the minds of Ernst & Young executives when they reviewed the energy and maintenance costs of the company’s New York headquarters. Ernst & Young’s Times Square building has 32 floors and 5,200 employees. The annual cost of lighting ran into seven figures.

Ernst & Young brought together a team consisting of the lighting design company One Lux Studio, Philips Lightolier Energy Services, and JAS consulting. The team agreed to replace the lighting in Ernst & Young’s HQ with a solution from Philips Lighting.

Ernst & Young’s lighting team decided on certain criteria for the project. The lighting system had to make the best use of the energy-saving benefits of LED light bulbs. It also had to create the right levels of light for each area, whether this was a private office, a conference room, an open office area or a communal area.

The team came up with an efficient Philips Lighting solution to meet these criteria. The solution used bespoke LED lamp fixtures to match the size of areas and rooms, and the need for lighting in each. The result was a better quality of light than before.

The team also considered the LED lighting control systems for the building. By so doing, it was able to give Ernst & Young more control over the use of energy.

Finally, the team liaised with the area’s labour union. This way, it ensured the installation of the Philips Lighting solution went as smoothly as possible on each of the building’s 32 floors.

The result of installing a Philips Lighting solution in the Ernst & Young HQ is an annual energy and maintenance saving of $1 million. Actual energy use has fallen by 2.9 million kWh per year.

These are considerable reductions. Thanks to Philips Lighting, Ernst & Young has also cut its carbon dioxide emissions by around two million pounds a year. This drop in the pollution level is helping Ernst & Young with its application to gain Energy Star status.

All in all, a Philips Lighting solution has proved to be precisely what Ernst & Young had in mind when it began its lighting project. Companies around the world can follow this example. By replacing conventional lighting with LED light bulbs, they can cut energy costs, maintenance expenditure and pollution.
